The True Hong Kong: Insights from a local perspective: Elaine Chiu
Le Méridien Cyberport is proud to feature the inspiring works of Elaine Chiu, an emerging local artist at Restaurant & Bar Umami and PSI Bar starting from 28 May 2018 to 31 August 2018. Elaine is specialized in watercolors and her work mainly connected with the Hong Kong local landscapes and cityscapes, concentrating in exploring the overlooked or remarkable places in Hong Kong.
Elaine studies Art History at the University of Hong Kong and she starts her drawing journey since she was a child. Elaine’s mother is a painter and with the influence and guidance from her mother, her art skill becomes more mature and sophisticated. Elaine loves the texture of watercolors as the color is very transparent and it is very challenging to master in watercolors. The light and shadow effect in various colours were employed in the paintings.
Elaine started her urban sketching few years ago and she loves to stroll around Hong Kong to get the inspiration. She want to express her love towards her home town and she believed drawing is the most direct way. Despite her young age, she is determined to explore her local identity as a Hong Konger.
“I would like to capture Hong Kong’s moments with my own perspective”. Elaine said, “I love my hometown very much. Yet, I feel that the local Hong Kong’s culture is diminishing, such as the street signs and some old buildings. There are so much life and dynamism. Due to the rapid growth, people tends to forget these Hong Kong unique characteristic when time goes on.”
Elaine believed that as a artist, she has the responsibility to reflect her feelings and experience towards Hong Kong through her art. As a post 90’s, she hopes that her paintings can acts as an album to record the history of Hong Kong.
